Jan 17, 2019

BRUSSELS — More than 10,000 students skipped school again in Belgium to join a march demanding better protections of the globe's fragile climate. Despite the rain and cold, the colorful protest march in Brussels was bigger than the initial one last week. Banners reading "School strike 4 Climate" and "Skipping school? No. We fight for our future," highlighted the march, which was free of incidents. Some schools show understanding for the no-shows. Patrick Lancksweerdt, a director of a local school, told De Standaard newspaper that "education has to turn youngsters into mature citizens. By their actions, they proved that they...

Famed Naples pizzeria latest target of bombs linked to mob

Jan 17, 2019

ROME — A popular Naples pizzeria is the latest target of bombings in the area which Italian authorities have linked to mobsters. A small blast outside Pizzeria Sorbillo in the city's historic center early Wednesday damaged the eatery's metal grating. The ANSA news agency said eight bombs have targeted Naples-area businesses in recent days. Last month, a pizzeria was bombed in the nearby town of Afragola. The attacks are under investigation. Chamber of Deputy President Roberto Fico, a Neapolitan, decried "vile" intimidation attacks by the Camorra, the Naples-area crime syndicate. Gino Sorbillo's pizzeria, which was torched five years ago, draws...

Jan 17, 2019

MILAN — Milan menswear designers are sending clear signals for next fall and winter: Feminine touches are not only acceptable, they are necessary. During three days of Milan Fashion Week previews focused on menswear, collections featured shiny and sheer textiles, sequined garments, lace and scoop necks. The trend to feminize the male wardrobe could be interpreted as encouragement for getting in touch with a female side or as an explicit sign of solidarity after a year when the sexual harassment and assault of women became a global theme. Some highlights from the final day of shows in Milan on Monday,...

Croatia nixes F-16 purchase from Israel after US objection

Jan 17, 2019

ZAGREB, Croatia — Croatia's government on Monday formally canceled a $500 million deal to buy 12 used fighter jets from Israel after it collapsed over U.S. objections. The defense minister said the Balkan country will restart the search for the right deal. Israel and Croatia reached a tentative deal in March for the sale of the upgraded F-16 Barak fighter planes, pending U.S. approval to allow the American-made technology to be purchased by a third party. The deal ran into trouble after Washington said Israel needed to strip off upgrades that were added after Israel took delivery of the aircraft...
