EU, UK to have more Brexit talks but key disagreement intact

Feb 20, 2019

BRUSSELS — The European Union on Tuesday warned British Prime Minister Theresa May that her trip to EU headquarters to seek an elusive breakthrough in Brexit negotiations stands no chance of success when it comes to her central demand for the divorce deal to be reopened. Reinforcing the message, EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker made it clear that he had little hope that something fruitful would emerge during his evening talks with May Wednesday, and that the stalemate between Britain and the 27 other EU nations would likely continue. "There is not enough movement for me to able to assume...

EU gets heavy-duty on pollution: 1st standards for trucks

Feb 20, 2019

BRUSSELS — The European Union on Tuesday reached a tentative agreement on the first specific EU standards for trucks, seeking to get polluting CO2 levels down. The agreement among negotiators from the European Parliament and member nations says such emissions for new trucks will have to be 30 percent lower by 2030 compared with today's levels. Heavy trucks carry over two-thirds of freight across the 28-nation bloc. EU Commissioner Arias Canete said the standards "will help tackle emissions, as well as bring fuel savings to transport operators and cleaner air for all Europeans." The rules will still need to be...

EU warns of reduced imports if Trump puts tariffs on cars

Feb 20, 2019

BRUSSELS — The European Union warned U.S. President Donald Trump Monday that the bloc will step back from a commitment to buy more American soybeans and liquid gas if European cars are hit with punitive tariffs. The U.S. Commerce Department is expected issue its guidance on whether auto imports endanger U.S. national security enough to justify import taxes, giving Trump 90 days to decide whether to impose them. EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said that during a summit in Washington last summer, Trump promised not to damage trans-Atlantic trade with such measures. "Trump has given me his word that there...

From Bogart to millennials: Italian hat maker tries new look

Feb 20, 2019

SPINETTA MARENGO, Italy — Hats off, Bogie. The traditional Italian hat maker Borsalino, whose fedora has defined the rough-and-tumble images of Robert Redford, Frank Sinatra and Humphrey Bogart, has a plan to appeal more to women and millennials by pushing into high-end fashion, streetwear and even sportswear. The recent troubles of the company, which has been rescued financially by a private equity fund, underline the difficulties facing Italian companies — not only fashion brands — seeking scale to stay competitive and grow in the age of globalization. Entering new markets, targeting new demographics and expanding retail presence all require cash....

European car sales slide in January

Feb 20, 2019

MILAN — The European carmakers' association says new passenger car sales in the region dropped by 4.6 percent in January, weighed down by big declines in Spain and Italy. Despite the drop, the association said Friday that the 1.2 million cars sold last month in the European Union marked the second-best January since 2009. It compared with 1.25 million a year earlier. German manufacturer Volkswagen registered a 6.5 percent decline in sales, but maintained its dominant 24-percent market share.
